Gunnison Mine
ARCO COAL COMPANY
1500 Security Life Building
Denver, CO 80202
Dear Mr. Kuchta:
During the development of designs for the reconstruction of
State Highway 133 east of Somerset, we have had many discussions
with officials of ARCO Coal Company and have been fully apprized
as to the location and function of mine facilities for the proposed
Mt. Gunnison mine. We are satisfied that appropriate measures are
being taken to insure the public safety for thosefacilities located
within 100 feet of both the existing roadway and proposed new high-
way.
We were somewhat surprised to learn about the restriction that
mine facilities should be a minimum of 100 feet from a highway right-
of-way line since many existing mines fail to meet this criterion,
with no apparent detrimental safety impacts.
In the event that a public hearing is required to invite cit-
izencomment on this issue, we would be willing to testify as stated
above.
Very truly yours,
E.
