Vegetative Observations around Peacock Coal Mine
April 23, 1981
,lames G. Erickson
The site was visited on April 23, 1981 and a walking tour was made of the
area, noting plants seen along the way and observing all areas not walked,
so that reasonable assurance of coverage was made. There is not much
variety in the vegetative cover within the confines of 1;~e mining area.
The letters which identify the portions of the site described will key to
the enclosed map. M
Area A:
Pinus edulis, pinon pine
Jun3^erus sco~ulor~um, Rocky Mountain juniper
uercus ga eml li, Gambel's oak
The above three trees dominate this area, and to a large extent
they dominate the entire site. Exceptions wil] be noted. In addition
to the three above, the fallowing plants were seen:
Chr sothamnus sip.., rabbit brush: fairly common
ucca g aura, yucca comnron in the upper parts of Area A
Mahonia re ens, Oregon grape common in the upper parts of Area A
Grasses were common in the lower part of Area A.
Area B:
The area around the shaft entry, where much machinery is used, is
largely devoid of vegetation at this time. There are a few pinon
and juniper trees still remaining.
Area C:
This area is characterized by pinon, juniper, Gambel's oak, and a
few shrubs of the kind to be described in Area D.
Area D:
This is a composite observation, made while walking up the ridge to
a northerly direction. Although pinon, juniper, and Gambel's oak
are present, this area is dominated by deciduous shrubs. Those
which could be Identified at this time of year are listed.
Cercocarpus montanus, mountain mahogany
Ceanothus fendleri, fendler ceanothus
meA-ranch er s~rp. , serviceberry
Pero h llum ramosissimum, squawapple
untia ra inesque~, p ickly pear cactus
!n addition, the area had a good flora of low-growing fortis.
