habitat. It does not make much sense to have two roads up this narrow canyon. Is it possible for
the coal company to replace the existing haul road and let all traffic use one right of way?
DOW monitoring requests
The applicant indicated that fish were present in Alamosa Canyon but that fish
populations were no[ sampled. The fish community in Alamosa Canyon must be sampled to
identify which species are present.
The frequency of water quality sampling needs to be addressed. The DOW is of the
opinion that at least monthly sampling is needed at the mouth of Lorencito Canyon and in the
Purgatoire River upstream and downstream of the mine site.
As a final issue the DOW is concerned about the estimate the loss of 1,920 linear feet of
fish habitat listed on page 2.05-79. That loss seems to be higher than needed for 12 stream
crossings. Is it possible to get more detail regarding this projected loss of habitat? How much of
the habitat loss will be in the area of water inhabited by the flathead chub?
The DOW appreciates the opportunity to comment regarding this application. If eve can
be of further assistance please contact me at 1-303-291-7224. You have also contacted other
DOW employees regarding this issue and I know they would be more than willing to provide as
much assistance as possible.
Cc.
