<br />Introduction <br /> <br />A cultural resources sample inventory of the North Thompson Creek Mine <br />site and mine plan areas was conducted 18-19 June 1985 for Snowmass Coal <br />Company at the request of the Office of Surface Mining (OSM) and the U.S. <br />Department of Agriculture, Forest Service (USES). The survey was effected <br />for compliance with Federal Special Conditions attached to Permit Number <br />CO-0025 issued by OSM in December 1983, and with Executive Order 11593, <br />the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, and the Archaeological Re- <br />sources Protection Act of 1979. Field work was performed by Grand River <br />Institute personnel under USES Special Use Permit #415-84. <br />Location of Project Area <br />The project area is located in Pitkin County, Colorado, in (see Figure 1): <br />T. BS., R. 89W., Section <br />Section <br />Section <br />Section <br />Section <br />Section <br />Section <br />T. 95., R. 89W., Section <br />Section <br />Section <br />21, E9:; <br />22; <br />27; <br />28, E'h; <br />33, E'h; <br />34; <br />35; <br />2 , W'Iz ; <br />3; and <br />4, E'h, 6th P.M. <br />Approximately half of the area coincides with private lands owned by Snow- <br />mass Coal Company; the other half lies within the White River National For- <br />est. The North Thompson Creek Mine is situated roughly in the center of <br />the study area and lies approximately twelve miles south of Carbondale. <br />Environmental Overvievr <br />The study area straddles the North Thompson Creek drainage and encom- <br />passes the highlands to either side--an unnamed ridge to the north and Stony <br />
