A cultural resources sample inventory of the North Thompson Creek Mine
site and mine plan areas located on private lands and lands administered by
the U.S. forest Service (White River National Forest) was conducted by Grand
River Institute at the request of Snowmass Coal Company of Carbondale, Colo-
rado. The study area is in Township 8 South, Range 89 West, Sections 21, 22,
27, 28, 33, 34, 35, and Township 9 South, Range 89 West, Sections 2, 3, and
4. A search of the Colorado Archaeological Site Inventory, the Colorado In-
ventory of Historic Sites, and nominations pending or on the National Regis-
ter of Historic Places produced no known archaeological and/or historical/
architectural resources in the vicinity of the study area. A sample sur-
vey performed by Carl E. Conner (Project Archaeologist) and Jim Conner on
18-19 July 1985 identified three isolated finds, all of which are considered
insignificant but which do represent limited use of the area by prehistoric
peoples. It is recommended that no further consideration of cultural re-
sources need be given the surface extent of the mine project as currently
proposed.
Carl E.
