sites in this region.
The two interior quartzite flakes.(5PT509) were found together along
an existing road. Neither shows evidence of utilization.
From the isolated finds recorded, it appears that the ridge tops were
used for limited activity purposes such as hunting and floral resource pro-
cessing. Large mammals browse the area, and wild berries, grasses, and fortis
are abundant. The lack of permanent water probably precluded habitation of
the ridge tops; base camps were likely situated at lower elevations adjacent
to permanent streams or springs.
Recam~endations
Very Iittle of the project area will actually be subject to subsidence,
and very little evidence of cultural resources was found. Therefore, it is
our conclusion that no further consideration of cultural resources need be
given the surface extent of the subject mining project. Of course, should
surface-disturbing activities reveal archaeological materials, it is the
Company's responsibility to report them to the State Historic Preservation
Officer and cease work until they can be evaluated.
References Cited
Baker, Steven G.
1977 A cultural resource inventory of four proposed core drill lo-
cations for Anschutz Coal Corporation's operations in the White
River National Forest, Pitkin County, Colorado.
