i ~
• •
(5)
in 1976. Reclamation and revegetation efforts were initiate i in
the summer of 1977. Unfortunately, a nnjor storm washed awa~ some
of the seeded areas in the early Eall. These areas were revggetated
during the late fall at considerable expense to CWI. These ~fforts
will be renewed by CWI's consultant when the spring thaw mak~s a
revegetation effort possible. Parenthetically, our consultant,
who has a proven track record in the field, believes that CW 's
efforts are exemplary. He wants to have the Environmental P~.ant
Center at Meeker (SCS) use CW7's mine as a field test site f~r
reclamation and revegetation techniques.
The last EPA criticism dealt with our failure to speci
a reference method that could he used to measure revegetatiop success.
Our consultant has informed us that there is no standard method
for assessing revegetation success presently in use by the t~lechnical
community. If EPA would like to specify a standard method, CWI
will have its consultant consider it. CWI will use a recog~nized*
"line-transect~~ method to determine that the percent of cov~~er of
the revegetated slopes are equal to or greater than that of t he
surrounding area. As discussed earlier, our reclamation and revegetation
program is thoroughly treated in the mining plan. Some additional
i
detail on the final revegetation program is also supplied in this
memorandum under the treatment of No. V "Stability of Post Mining
Slopes"
*One example of a recognized line-transect method is thlat
described in "Range Research - Basic Problems and Techniques",
1962, National Academy of Sciences/National Research Council,
Publication 980.
i
,. i li~ ~ h~ l-d l~l ~~l~i a ~~~1 ~~~.~ ~i ..
