Executive Director
MINED LAND RECLAMATION
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street
Denver, Colorado 80203 Tel. (303) 866-3567
David C. Shelton
Director
N~210RANDiP~I
'IC): Carol Russell
FRCM: M. S. Savage S aV h 4~-
RE: Dorchester (Florence) seed mixes
ll4TE: Septanber 24, 1981
Carol:
I would make the follaai.ng recarmendations regarding Dorchester's
seed mixes.
Dorchester should remove crested wheatgrass, and western wneatgrass
from their seed mixes. The Division feels that these very aggressive
sod forming species will dominate the site, and have an extremely
detrimental effect on species diversity. These are also introduced
species, and Linder the provisions of 4.15.2 the operator must specif~c.tl';
demonstrate that: A. they are desirable and necessary to achieve the
approved post mining land use, and B. they are necessary to achieve a
quick, temporary and stabilizing vegetative cover that aids in controlling
erosion, and C. the species are compatible with plant and animal species
of the region and, D. the species are not poisonous or noxiws, and meet
the requirements of all applicable introduced species statues.
Dorchester has not incorporated any shrubs ar forbs into their "undisturbed"
area mix. Trees and shrubs constitute 26% of the cover and should be in-
corporated into the seed mix. As an aside, I could not find any informa-
tion addressing the weedy plan density of the refuse area to be disturbed.
This must be included as baseline information.
At least one leguminous forb should be included in each mix to help build
nitrogen reserves into the soil. I would suggest the inclusion of ricer
m ilkvetch and sanfoin in the seed mix. The Division will not accept yellaa
sweetclover, as this forb tends to dominate reclaimed sites also.
