I have consulted with our senior staff
and with field personnel in the area of the proposed mine.
It is our belief that the baseline data provides the foundation
for later wildlife plans, reclamation plans and possible
mitigation. This is not the time to cut corners or to cut back on
data that has been traditionally gathered. With recent concerns
regarding industries ability to reclaim any significant amount of
shrubland and forest we feel it would be a mistake to reduce the
amount of baseline data or to depend on data that has been
gathered some distance from the site.
we think the best approach to determining what data should be
gathered would be to meet with Peabody's staff and for us to
review our concerns with them. Also we already have considerable
wildlife data on the area and there is no need for them to repeat
work that has already been done.
Please see if this approach is agreeable to them. If not, we will
submit our recommendations on the minimum that we feel is needed.
Please advise me on how you would like to proceed.
S• erely,
J• Morris
ldlife Biologist
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Kenneth Salazar, Executive Director
WILDLIFE COMMISSION, William R.
