Range
transects taken in the summer of 1977 by Energy Fuels revealed that the
combined three seeded species produced 59.8 percent vegetative cover.
Pre-disturbance vegetative cover was estimated to be 35 percent. Thus, the
reclaimed area had a higher plant (vegetative) cover than the vegetation prior
to mining, using introduced species.
Total production obtained during the summer of 1977 revealed that 700 pounds
of air-dry forage was measured on the reclaimed site. The low production was
attributed to the low precipitation, and rodent and rabbit damage. (See Table
II ).
Density counts taken by Energy Fuels indicate that the overall density for the
entire site in 1977 was 4.02 plants per square foot. According to Energy
Fuels, seedings in Northeastern Colorado are considered successful when one or
more plants are established per two feet of (seed) row. (No documentation).
Pit 3 Seedi
Pit 3 seeding was seeded in May 1975. A standard farm grain drill was used at
a depth of 1/2 to 3/4 inch. Seedbed preparation consisted of disking and
harrowing. The seed mixture included: Amur Intermediate Wheatgrass, Lincoln
Smooth Brome, Alfalfa, Orchardgrass and oats.
