M.D.
Executive Darr, ctar
July 13, 1982

Mr. W. E. Hamilton
Star Route
Arboles, Colorado 81121
Dear Mr. Hamilton:
This letter is in regards to your complain[ concerning excessive dust
from the Chimney Rock Coal operation located near your property.
On June 23, 1982, I performed an on-site inspection of the Chimney Rock
facility. I was accompanied by Mr. Mike Keegan of Chimney Rock Coal.
I was~able to observe most phases of the mining operation during my
visit. Emissions from the two rock drills were well controlled--one
by use of water spray and the other using a vacuum system. A water
truck was in use on the haul roads. The crushing and loading operation
was somewhat dusty but not in violation of State regulations. Anew
dust control system currently being installed on the crusher and grizzly
should control that area. The overburden piles seemed to have the high-
est potential for fugitive dust emissions. Since the slopes are too steep
for the water truck to negotiate, Chimney Rock is looking into the possi-
bility of purchasing a water cannon that can run off of the current water
truck. More importantly, Mr. Keegan stated that the area being mined
which is. closest to your property will be contoured and revegetated
within the next twelve months.
In conclusion, I did not observe a dust problem at Chimney Rock during
my inspection and they did seem to be making an effort to control the
dust that they are generating. Although differe t meteorological con-
ditions may occasionally create a dust problem t~t affects you, I am
hopeful that the revegetation of that part of their mine nearest your
home will alleviate your problem. r
Please feel free to contact me again if you have further problems.
Sincerely,
~. ~-->
~ James A.
