iii iiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
United States Department of the Interior
OFFICE OF SURFACE MINING
Reclamation and Enforcement
BROOKS TOWERS
1020 15TH STREET
DENVER, COLORADO 80202
April 5, 1982
Mr. Arthur C. Townsend
State Historic Preservation Officer
1300 Broadway
Denver, Colorado 80203
Attention: Jim Greene
Dear Mr. Townsend:

APR 14 1982
MINED LAND P,ECLtIMATION
Colo Dept. of Natural Resources
The Office of Surface Mining has completed its review of the cultural resource
portions of the Bear Coal Company's proposed Hear Coal Mine in Gunnison
County, Colorado.
The underground workings of the Bear Coal Mine will underlie the proposed Mt.
Gunnison Coal Mine. The mine surface facilities are in place and all proposed
ground-disturbing activities have occured. Because of this, no cultural re-
source survey specific to the Bear i4ine was conducted. A survey on the adja-
cent Mt. Gunnison lease was conducted in 1977 by Applicate and Hurlbutt and
was included with the Bear Mine application. The Bear Coal Company also uti-
lized the National Register check for the Mt. Gunnison mine in its mine plan
document, as it overlaps their lease property. Cultural resource surveys in
areas of potential subsidence, if required, will be the responsibility of the
Mt. Gunnison operation for they are planning to mine at a stratagraphically
higher seam of coal. Unanticipated finds will be covered by stipulation
(Attachment 1).
Since all xsurface disturbing activities have taken place and no cultural re-
sources will be impacted, we ask for your concurrence in our finding of "No
Effect" to the cultural resources if the Bear Mine is approved.
If you have any questions concerning this matter, please call Foster Kirby at
837-5656.
=r
Sincerely,
.~ , s~~~
Richard E.
