Cattany <br />Division Director <br />Natural Resource Trustee <br />The Division received a letter dated November 9, 2006 concerning additional documentation regarding the <br />proposed Northfield coal mine located in Fremont County. The permit area is further described as follows: <br />Portions of Sections 11, l2, 13, 14, 22, 23, 24, Township 19 South, Range 70 West. The surface disturbance will <br />be located on about 25 acres in the SEl/4 NW 1/4 of Section 13. In order for us to approve this application, we are <br />required to make a finding that "the proposed operations will not adversely affect any publicly owned park or place <br />listed on or those places eligible for listing, as determined by the SHPO, on the National Register of Historic <br />Places, unless approved jointly by the Board and the Federal, State, or local agency with jurisdiction over the park <br />or place. <br />The Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety (DBMS) has reviewed three letters of correspondence from your <br />office concerning this project. <br />• letter dated January 3Q, 2006 from SHPO to Environmental Alternatives <br />• letter dated September 29, 2006 from SHPO to DBMS <br />• letter dated November 9, 2006 from SHPO to DBMS <br />Please find enclosed a copy of Map 7, Mine Plan. Following review of all previous correspondence, we have the <br />following questions. <br />Does SHPO require on-the-gound cultural resources surveys to be completed by Northfield Partners for <br />the proposed facility and vent shaft disturbed areas (highlighted in yellow) shown on Map 7? <br />2. Does SHPO require on-the-ground cultural resource surveys to be completed by Northfield Partners for <br />the areas to be undermined and subsided, shown within the dotted red line on Map 7? <br />Is the project cleared by your office to proceed with regard to cultural and historic resources? <br />Thanks for your assistance.
