Dept. of Alaturai Resotlrce~
Re: Grand Mesa Coal Company's Red Canyon Mine, Delta County, Colorado
Dear Ms. Sudler:
We have completed our review of the cultural resource documentation included in
Grand Mesa Coal Company's Red Canyon mining and reclamation plan. The survey
was conducted satisfactorily and associated documents are complete.
Two prehistoric lithic scatters (SDT241, SDT242) and five isolated prehistoric
finds (SDT243, 244, 245, 246, and 247) were identified by a 1981 Nickens and
Associates survey; all are located in the potential subsidence areas.
Additionally, the Nickens inventory noted, but did not formally record, some
historic structures in the mine plan area which were outside the sample survey
units. Nickens recommends that neither the lithic scatters nor the isolated
finds be considered eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic
Places. Nickens also recommends that further survey be conducted if it is
determined that the project (subsidence) will impact the resource base. In our
opinion, sites SDT241 and SDT242 and the isolated finds (SDT243, 244, 245, 246,
and 247) do not meet the criteria for eligibility for inclusion in the National
Register.
We request your concurrence in the not eligible recommendations for the forementioned
sites and in a finding of "No Effect" (with stipulations) as a result of project
approval.
Should you have questions, please call Foster Kirby at (303) 837-2451.
Sincerely,
Attachment
Rex L.
