While it has lost much of its
integrity due to the removal of most of the buildings and
equipment, we find that it still retains a sense of place since new
buildings have not been constructed within its borders. We concur
that it remains eligible.
We concur that 5DT1053, the King Mine, is eligible to the National
Register. While this site has also lost many of its buildings,
several of the major ones are still standing and retain sufficient
integrity to warrant eligibility.
Prehistoric site 5DT1050 is not eligible. This small lithic
scatter has no diagnostic artifacts, features or subsurface
potential. It will yield no further information important to
prehistory. No further work is necessary at this site.
It is our understanding that the home garage at 5DT122 is to be
demolished. We recommend that it be recorded to Historic American
Buildings Survey/Historic American Engineering Record (HABS/HAER)
Level II standards. While the other buildings at 5DT122 and those
at 5DT1053 will not be directly impacted during work under this
permit, we recommend that these buildings and any equipment at the
powerhouse be recorded to the same NABS/HAER standards. Impacts
from mining operations may in all probability damage these
important resources that are linked to Colorado's industrial
activities. Contact Joseph Bell (303-866-3035) with our office to
determine what should be completed for the Level II documentation.
