Dept. of tilalural Reso~~rces
Rockcastle Coal Mining Application, Routt County, 78-45
Appropriate Division of Wildlife personnel have reviewed the above-
referenced application and feel it is acceptable with minor modifications.
Specifically they wish the number of oak and serviceberry groups to be
planted increased to 20 of each species. This area is recognized as a
deer winter range and these shrub species are an important part of the
winter diet.for deer.
Although not related directly to reclamation of affected land surface,
illegal harvest of wildlife by commuting miners has proven to be a problem
related to other mining activity in the state. It is a common practice for
miners returning from work to shoot deer along highways. This problem
was alleviated at the Redstone coal mine by a company policy of busing ,
miners to and from work. The practice has also proven very energy
efficient compared to the use of private automobiles and pickup trucks.
Finally, the haul road will present a hazard to wintering deer in the area.
If the speed of trucks using it can be reduced to 30-35 mph, particularly
during dawn and dusk hours, the "road kill" could be reduced considerably.
AFW:cs
cc: Evans
Barrows
Taliaferro
Clark
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Harris Sherman, Executive Dlrector • WILDLIFE COMMISSION, Thomas Farley, Chairman
Sem Caudill, Vice Chairman Roger Clark, Secretary • lean K.
