The use of this mixture m addition to
relocating uve material from on-sae would achieve the goal of establishing a vegetatively diverse
plant community on the surface mine area. In addition, CDOW would encourage the use of the
following important browse species in the revegetation prescription:
Species list:
serviceberry
snowbetry
~ chokecherry
YQ currant
~IS
Amelanchier spp.
Symphoricarpos spp.~
1?runus vaginiiana
Rtbes spp. ~
V w /r`a~°`~~ .
~ ~~~
Sedimentation
Ia a letter dated 17 March 97, Joha Woodling reiterated CDOW concern about
increased sedimentation resuaing from the proposed action. In addition to those comments, our
staff noted the lack of vegetative buffeting between the creek and the proposed mad. TLe
creation of a `Yler strip" through the retention of residual grass could assist in reducing over-land
sorb movement and aid m the reduction of sediment.
Water quality analysis
CDOW would strongly recommend that the protocols and detection limits outlined
in Woodlmg's letter dated 17 March 97 be adopted by the applicant, and CDOW receivf an
annual copy of water quality monitoring data.
Aquatic species
In addition to the issues outlined in the 17 March 971etter, CDOW requests the
opportunity to sample aquatic species within the permit area as deemed necessary by our agency.
We would also request the applicant provide CDOW a copy of all fish monitoring data collected
during the life of the mine.
Human/wildlffe conflicts
It is the opinion of CDOW that the potential for human bear conflicts within the
project area is high, especially at the portal saes. We recommend the applicant install bear-proof
trash containers in all areas with human habitation as well as implementing bear awareness
education for mine employees. We might also note that a limited mtmber of public hunters access
the Ffill Ranch as part of the Rancbnmg for Wt7dhfe program. Tt may be beneficial to post
informational signs in certain areas to avoid potential conflicts with these activities.
As always, we appreciate the opportunity to work with the Division of Minerals and Geology in
