DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES III III III IIIIIII III
D. Monte Pascoe. Executive Director
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
DAVID C. SHEL70N Director
Ricnartl D Hamm
Governor
April 6, 1983
Mr. Uern Pfannenstiel
Seneca Coals, Ltd.
Suite 400
10375 East Harvard Avenue
Denver, Colorado 80231
Re: Seneca II-W Permit Review (Vegetation)
File No. C-057-82
Dear Mr. Pfannenstiel:
At our meeting on March 31, 1983, we discussed a number of vegetation
issues which had been noted in the December 8, 1982 completeness letter
from Jim Herron of our office to Ton1 Wainwright of Seneca. We also
discussed additional issues regarding wildlife and reveget~ttion which
were brought to your attention in a letter of February 10, 1983, also
from Jim Herron. I have summarized my understanding of our discussion
below. Items we discussed in a phone conversation on April b, 1983 are
also reflected in this letter.
Completeness Issues
• The completeness letter noted that sample adequacy Clad not: been met
fur production and that an estimate of tree density for the aspen type
had not been provided.
You have proposed that herbaceous production be re sampled this
summer in all vegetation types, and vegetation cover be resampled in the
aspen type. Herbaceous production will be estimated by clipping randomly
located m2 plots. Production cages will be set out prior to the
yrazing season; a maximum of 50 samples will be collected in sagebrush
and mixed brush affected areas and 30 samples will be collected in
reference areas. The access road corridor will not be included in the
sampling. Amaxilnum of 30 cover and production samples will be required
in the aspen affected area, due to the limited extent of the type in the
affected area.
Aspen density will be estimated by a 50 x 5m belt transect method.
A maximum sample size of 30 transects was agreed upon.
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203 Tel.
