I
have also talked to Brian Nhmson of MLRD. As I told them there are
three major concerns:
1. Loss of mule deer habitat, displacement of deer and loss of
deer from ppll;a;n.,c with coal haulage vehicles.
2. Disturbance of nesting raptors, particularly the possibility
of disturbance if additional drilling is indicated or if new
and/or additional surface features are needed.
3. Loss of chukar habitat, displacement of chukar, and loss of
clnilcar from collisions with increased traffic.
By Dopy of memo fran USFi+7S to OSTi, I believe it will be stipulated
that Sheridan implement a deer monitoring program of at least three
years. Sheridan's own information indicates high deer use in Nhmger
and McClane Canyons. It should also be stipulated that habitat en-
hancanerit be performed to replace forage for wintering deer. It is
important to understaru3 that the herd is w~7.7. below population ob-
jectives and the potential for problems will be mach greater as the
objective is realized.
Potential problems with cfnilsars has never been mentioned; therefore,
it may not be possible to stipulate chukar mitigative measures. Con-
cerns would be similar to mule deer. Potential raptor problems should
be adequately awided through proposed USF'v7S stipulations.
WDC:ch
xc: J.
