• •
I. PURPOSE AND NEED FOR ACTION
•

As a part of the Federal coal management program, the Department of
• the Interior, through the Bureau of Land Management, conducts
leasing of Federal coal to assure adequate coal supplies are
available to meet national long-term energy requirements and
• adequate reserves are available to continue existing production.
Getty Minerals Marketing, Inc. has applied for coal lease
• application C-40672 under the emergency leasing criteria in 43 CFR
3425.1-4. This area of Federal coal named the Little Middle Creek
area is directly adjacent to leased Federal coal where mining
• operations are currently underway by the applicant. The recoverable
coal will be by-passed if this area is not leased in time to be
included in the mining sequence. Therefore, this environmental
• analysis is being prepared to assess the impacts that will result
from leasing and subsequent development of this area. The proposed
action is to lease a minimum of 1,045.90 acres and 12,310,700 tons
• of recoverable Federal coal which would alleviate a by-pass
situation on some of the coal reserves in this area.
• In addition to the area Getty has applied for, another area directly
to the north will be analyzed under a separate alternative. This
area named the Fish Creek area will be included in this analysis
[7
E-1
0001E
• 08/15/85
..... .. .
