r._
:- • •
Page 2
Linda Walker
March 11, 1980
several samples for the access road areas to be reclaimed (approximately
8-12 samples for the active site).
These disturbed materials should be analyzed for CaC03, copper, molybdenum,
iron, maganese, lead and zinc~and boron and selenium 2f the pH of these
materials exceeds 8.6 or the acid-base potential if the pH is less than
5.0. rThe lime and metals and trace elements analysis will run about
524.00/sample excluding analysis ~or boron, selenium and acid-base
potential (CSU 1979 price list): From these analyses, we will try to
identify problematic concentrations of toxic material which will require
disposal or covering and develop the appropriate plans. We will also
need to determine the amount of cover needed over these materials to
achieve the revegetation performance standards. It is likely in the
event of potential toxicity problems that we need to stipulate field trials
on small plots within the disturbed area to evaluate vegetation success
with varying amounts of cover. The staff can work with the operation in
design of these trials and it is possible that someone from CSU might
be interested in establishing such a field trial.
For any topsoil imported to the site, the applicant should analyze this
topsoil for pH, sodium absorption ratio, electrical conductivity and
particle soil analysis to substitute its suitability as a plant growth
medium.
I would be happy to meet with Grand Mesa Coal to discuss the above ideas
in more detail if desired.
Roger
/k
~ Sk„~~ G~CA~CIiS~f sk~~.,~,c~l cc-Oso ~ Pe,r.~.a-~,e~, - ~,+~~ S~2 ~
