~- • TREND
IN COLORADO
309 NEVADA AVE. TRINIDAD, COLORADO 81082
(719) 846-9412 (800) 7481970
Dan Matthews, Acting Director
State of Colorado
Mined Land Reclamation Division
1313 Sherman St. #215
Denver, Colorado 80203
Dear Mr. Matthews:
Mined Land
Reclamation Division
This letter is in response to an application SUP90-012 filed by
by Mr. Willian Davis with the Las Animas County Planning and land
use office for a conditional use land permit to operate a coal
strip mine near Trinidad, Colorado on Engleville Tract NW1/4 of
Section 29, T33S, R63W.
"TREND in Colorado" is a consolidation of the Las Animas County
Chamber of Commerce, the Trinidad-Las Animas County Economic
Development corporation, and the Trinidad downtown revitalization
organization. The accronym TREND stands for Trinidad Regional
Economic and Natural resource Development corporation.
Not only do we treasure our coal, natural gas, helium, C02,
timber, mountains, streams and lakes, we treasure our historical
heritage which dates back to the opening of the southwest by the
Santa Fe Trail, for which early traders used Fishers Peak as a
navigational landmark as they headed for Raton Pass. This same
peak is now the target of a coal strip mining operation.
As the countywide community and economic development agency we
have been asked to comment on this application request, and we
have a number of questions about his request for a state permit
for which we don't have answers.
Mr. Davis has stated that although his permit request has been on
file for a considerable length of time, there has been no nega-
tive feedback. This is probably true, as most of the public has
been unaware that this rumored project was in the works.
Our office has been inundated with negative response from both
local businesses and residents during the past week that the
project has gone public. Because of the proposed transportation
routes for the coal to reach the railhead there will probably be
additional concern expressed from the City of Trinidad for public
safety and potential street and bridge damage.
iii iiiiiiiiiiiii iii
999 HtCEIVED
SEP 2 8 1990
ein~rUC~C
Las Animus County's Cummnnity mld Business Developmem Agency
