The Paint Lookout Sandstone <br />has a local average thickness of 400' <br />The permit area lies along the west flank of the Perins <br />Peak syncline and bedding has a gentle south to south-southeast <br />dip. <br />Hydrogeolo~ya <br />The Cliff House and Menefee formations both have generally <br />low permeability and porosity. Ranges of permeability and poros- <br />ity for the Cliff Hcuse Sandstone are 0.0-9.02 millidarcys and <br />3.0~-17.23 porosity. Ranges of permeability and porosity for the <br />Menefee Formation are 0.0-78 ;millidarcys and 3.0-16.Oi porosity. <br />Continuity of permeability and porosity for both formations is <br />generally low as inc.icated by lit ho logic characteristics as seen <br />above. Soth the formations are breached docvndip within the permit <br />area by Coal Gulch. This would prevent saturation of any poten- <br />tial aquifer. The ax•ea of recharge lies less than one mile north <br />of this drainage (Se:e Geologic Plan and Section). South to south- <br />southeast dip would cause migration toward the synclinal trough <br />and toward Coal Gulch - if there were continuity of permeabili*_y <br />and porosity. Surface inspection of downdip outcrops in September <br />1986 revealed no spx:ings or seepage. There is springtime and <br />early summer discharge from mine portals 1 and 3 which indicates <br />that there is infiltration of surface runoff into fracturing re- <br />sulting from early Wining as reported by current operators. <br />The most favortnble potential aquifer of the Mesa Verde <br />Group, within the pfarmit area, is the Upper Point Lookout <br />(3) <br />
