r-
~.
Mr. William R. Beavers
Ptr. Pete Evans
August 13, 1980
Page -2-

N: ,a+,', (oho ,rlllwO w,~~ n.l p~.e vc d .m.~ rrl nnf w.. ~'i~ n•~e r~n~ y: ~'Me'~r.~
existing operationsrand-that a permit could be-granted)-with std~ulaEiona-for-ob-
taining.-the_.vegetation_data-in-]98~.
Reference areas would be located in two vegetation types, the pinyon-juniper and
the mixed shrub type. A reference area in the pinyon-juniper vegetation should be
of a size approximately equal to and in the immediate vicinity of the portal fa-
cilities location.
Collection of species for a species list will be accomplished in the Spring of
1981. At this time the presence of threatened, endangered, and noxious weedy
species will be noted. Specimens will be verified at the University of Colorado.
Cover data will be obtained by randomly placing quadrats of 1/2 X 2 meters in size
within each reference area. Within each quadrat, species cover, cover by rock,
bare ground, and litter will be noted. Enough data to be statistically accurate
with confidence levels at 80% will he taken.
Productivity of all herbaceous material will be obtained within each reference
area. Major species will be separated, while minor species will be combined by
lifeform. Tissue collected will be oven dried at 105 degrees centigrade for at
least 24 hours and weighed to the nearest .1 of a gram. Productivity of all her-
baceous material will be obtained in 1/2 X 2 meter quadrats within the reference
areas. Enough data will be obtained to be statistically accurate with confidence
levels at 80%.
Shrub tree density will be obtained within each of the reference areas by counting
the number of individuals of each species in at least 25, 50-meter square plots.
Plots will be randomly placed and will have neither duplication nor overlap.
Enough data to be statistically accurate with confidence levels at 80% will be ob-
tained.
Species diversity values will be calculated utilizing cover data. The Shannon-
Wiener index of diversity will be utilized.
Data obtained from the mixed shrub and pinyon-juniper reference areas will suffice
for the minimal disturbance which occurred in the oakbrush vegetation type. Pro-
ductivity of the orchard vegetation type will be assessed by noting the amount of
produce produced.
If the foregoing correctly states your understanding of the meeting and discus-
sions, please indicate by signing in the appropriate block below. If not, please
.amend this document to your understanding and sign in the appropriate block.
Please sign all copies and return one copy to CWI for our files.
Sincerely,
- ---~-~~ :-1~. -
Patricia M.
