The purpose of the
embankment is to prevent flood waters from the North Fork of the
Gunnison River from entering the facilities area of the proposed mine.
In addition, this embankment will also prevent the sediment contained
in the sediment pond from contaminating the IJorth Fork of the Gunnison
River during flood stages.
The attached maps show in profile, cross section and plan the location
of the dike embankment in relationship with Diversion Ditches C and D,
the sediment pond, the relative elevations of the 100-year flood of
the North Fork of the Gunnison River, expected flows of the diversion
ditches and existing ground elevations.
The general criteria which has been utilized for the dike embankment
consists of the following:
0 100-year flood elevation for the tJorth Fork of the Gunnison
River
0 1.0 foot freeboard
o Rip rap all slopes subject to flood waters
o Embankment compacted to 90% of Proctor dry density
o Locate dike embankment between Bear Coal Company surface
water control structures and North Fork of Gunnison River
The Bear Coal Company is currently finalizing the required permit
applications in order for mining to begin. The anticipated schedule
of permit approval is for mid to late April, 1982. 4lithout approval
