Dept. of Natural Resources
Dear Mr. Shelton:
As a result of the December 1983 inspection, the Office of Surface
Mining (OSM) has found a situation at Sundance Coal Company's Animas
mine that should be looked into further.
It seems that the company has not done all the required work that was
approved in the March 29, 1983 "Trailer Park" revision. Conversations
with Greg Lewicki, representing Sundance, and Susan Mowry of the Mined
Land Reclamation Division (MLRD) lead us to believe that topsoil at
the trailer site was not analyzed or salvaged as required. We did not
recognize the problem fully until after the inspection and so we did
not check to see if the topsoil requirements were actually met.
I would like to ask that your staff pay particular attention to this
issue on the next scheduled MLRD inspection. Because of the amount of
time that has passed since the revision was approved, I believe the
problem (if one exists) may be formally addressed now. Please give me
the results of your inspection as soon as you can. Feel free to call
if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
i
~ - / .
~_
,v'' ,_.
Robert H.
