i
..
EXHIBIT B
Water Resources
A. Surface water occurring on the affected land:
The area which will be disturbed by the exterior operations has
no surface water,
B. Subsurface water occurring on the affected land:
The stratigraghic section that will be disturbed consists
essentially of tight impermeable shaly sandstone, siltstone and
shale. It is unlikely that subsurface water will be encountered
in these units. This opinion is confirmed by the fact that there
has never been any water in the Blue Ribbon Mine.
C. Estimated water needs for the operation: Total
water needs should not exceed 5,000 gallons per working day.
P4ining consultants anticipate dust control requirements inside
the mine to be about 10 gallons per ton produced. Additionally,
much of this water can be pumped to the face and used again.
The remaining water will be used for consumptive and
sanitary purposes for the employees (less than ten), and for
exterior dust control equipment if and as needed.
D. Need for a NPDES permit: Sunflower Energy Corporation
has applied for a NPDES permit as a precautionary measure to avoid
potential delays or problems. The Blue Ribbon Mine has never had
any underground water and we do not anticipate any in the future.
However, if water does materialize, a portion will be used for
dust control purposes in the mine and. the excess pumped into an
exterior settling pond north of the proposed portal. Discharge
from the pond would filter down to a small gulch immediately
northwest of the settling pond.
A septic tank system will be installed to satisfy sanitary
and consumptive uses.
