La Plata Coal Draft Finings - 4 - May 18, 1987
The Huntington Spring is located on the north side of Hay Gulch west of the
La Plata No. 1 permit area. This spring, which may issue from either the
lower Menefee Formation or the Hay Gulch alluvium, has been adjudicated for a
water right. The applicant has stated that this water right has been
abandoned. As this adjudicated spring is located immediately down gradient
from the La Plata No. 1 mine site, the applicant has committed to determining
if the water right has been abandoned. If this spring is no longer
adjudicated, no further investigations or monitoring will be required. If,
however, the Huntington Spring water right is still active, the applicant has
committed to initiating a quarterly monitoring program, which consists of
collecting discharge data and field water quality parameters (temperature, pH,
electrical conductivity). The data collected from the spring shall be
submitted to the Division on an annual basis.
The water supply wells are located within or near the proposed permit area. A
third water well, located at an adjacent mine site, has been capped and
abandoned. Although no completion data has been submitted, it appears that
the abandoned well is completed in the underlying Point Lookout Sandstone.
The King Coal Production well is completed in the Hay Gulch alluvial aquifer.
Neither well will affect the respective completion zones.
