III IIIIIIIIIIIII III
999
•
i
MAC
Metcalf Archaeological Consultants, Inc.
July 25, 1997
Kent Gorham
Enviromnental Protection Specialist
Division of Minerals and Geology
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, CO 80203
FAX 303 832-8106
2 pages
re: Lorencito Canyon Mine
Deaz Kent,
RECEIVED
JUL 2 8 1997
Division of Minerals & Geology
Here is some clarification of the National Register eligibility status of two sites recorded during
the Lorencito Canyon Mine cultural resources inventory, in response to your query. Site
SLA6994, the Parsons Cabin, was originally evaluated potentially eligible for the National
Register, based largely on the integrity of the cabin at the site. This cabin burned to the ground
during the winter of 1996-97. With the cabin now no longer in existence, the potential for the
site to be eligible is lost. Other qualities that might cause the site to be eligible, such as
significant archaeological remains, aze not in evidence. As reported in The Lorencito Canyon
Mine: Results of a Cultural Resource Inventory, Research Design and Treatment Plan, Lns
Animas County, Colorado (McKibbin et al. 1997), the site is now recommended to be not
eligible for the National Register and no further work is recommended.
Site SLA7201, a chipped stone and ground stone artifact scatter and cairn, was also
recommended to be not eligible for inclusion on the National Register in the above-cited report.
No further work is recommended.
Confusion may have azisen since both these sites are listed as "need data" sites in the site
summary table of the 1996 preliminary report (Appendix B, Lorencito Canyon Mine: Existing
Literature Review, Summary of Cultural Resource Investigations, and Plans for Continuing
Investigations, Las Animas County, Colorado [McKibbin 1996]), an assessment that was revised
before the final report was submitted. In the text and the site summary table (Appendix C) of the
final report for the 1996 investigations (McKibbin et al. 1997), both sites are described or listed
as not eligible, which is the correct assessment. The final report for 1996 (McKibbin et al. 1997)
should reflect the current and correct assessments for all sites and will be more up-to-date than
(970) 328-6244 (701) 258-1215
FAX: (970) 328-5623 { , FAX: 701-258-7156
P.O.
