The baseline data is accurate and complete with
regard to wildlife species. It is true that the bottomland of Munger
Canyon is important deer winter range and use probably does approach 66
use-days use/acre.
We would recommend that the applicant monitor deer use of the canyon to
ascertain if the mine impacts such use. If no impact is noted in two
years, such monitoring can be abandoned.
Although many wildlife populations have shown a remarkable adaptation
to mining, it is not necessarily correct to apply findings from south-
eastern Montana to western Colorado. It does not appear that this
operation will increase the habitat diversity of the project area.
We do consider road kill by haul trucks and commuting miners to be a
direct result of mining and would ask that the applicant initiate a
report card system to document such kills. If this impact proves to
be insignificant in two years, the reporting system could be ceased.
We recommend the use of native plant species unless introduced species
are the only ones which show satisfactory survival in the area. We
greatly appreciate the opportunity to review this application and will
gladly assist the applicant in the planning process to reduce impacts
to wildlife species.
/d
cc: Clark - NW Region
File
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Harris Sherman, Executive Director WILDLIFE COMMISSION, Michael Higbee, Chairman
Wilbur Redden, Vice Chairman • Sam Caudill, Secretary • Jean K.
