highwall. Drilling of the three suggested strat holes are
believed to be unnecessary in addition to being very costly and
time consuming for the limited expansion of the data base.
Response B
Since the flow is both seasonal and storm event related,
then sampling can only occur under these two specific conditions.
Additional baseline water quality data can easily be established
as this permitting process continues.
Response C
Required monitoring procedures away from the mine area on
Lightner Creek and Coal Gulch should be adequate enough to detect
any changes in water quality. One alluvium well data point
located on Coal Gulch adjacent to Cherry Creek, on the north side
of Hiway 160, would allow sufficient alluvial monitoring. This
well would allow detection of any excursion near its departure
point from the permit area.
Response D
The Menefee formation is generally not considered to be an
aquifer. In the case of the Fiederspiel-Yeager well, it is
situated on the opposite flank of the Perins Peak syncline; and
over 3/4 mile to the south of the mine area. The well bottom
depth of 7342 feet in elevation; over 250' above the portal
elevation. It is assumed to be wholly in the Cliff House
sandstone, as is the Messier well.
