Carrying
capacity for cattle was determined from the 1982 herbaceous production esti-
mates assuming a 50 percent utilization of forage, an oven-dry weight to
air-dry weight conversion factor of 1.11 (Cook and Bonham 1977), and an
animal unit monthly air-dry forage requirement of 900 pounds (USDA 1976).
2.12 Agency Coordination
Mr. Dean Massey of Dorchester Coal Company and Mr. David Johnson
of Western Resource Development Corporation (WRD), vegetation consultant
to Dorchester Coal, met with Mr. Mike Savage of Colorado Mined Land Reclama-
tion on 5 August 1982 and presented a vegetation sampling program for the
planned Fruita Mine.
The quantitative sample techniques for vegetation cover, produc-
tion, and density were presented at this meeting. Mr. Savage reviewed the
sample techniques, requested minor alterations, and approved the sample
plans. The quantitative techniques presented above are those agreed to during
the meeting.
Mr. Savage was contacted on 23 August 1982 by Dr. David Buckner
regarding sample requirements for Gardner Saltbush Shrubland, a vegetation
type having very sparse plant cover. Later during the week, it was concluded
that this vegetation type, because of its extent in the affected area and owing
to the absence of an appropriate reclamation standard in the literature,
would be quantitatively sampled in the same manner as the other vegetation
types at the project site.
