No requirements were placed upon l;nergy Fuels to
conduct tests on overburden to determine the acid-forminc, or
toxic-producing proi>erties.. However, subsequent tests have
been conducted in adjacent strata through the same geolocic
strata. Results of these analyses reveal no acid or toxic-
prodticing agents present in any of the strata examined.
2. Topsoiling
A brief description has already been given on how
the topsoi]. was salvaged prior to stripping of the coal.
Topsoil c•:as reapplied usitiy tractors with the topsoil bei:z,
pushed uj~hill until a uniform t}~ic}:Hess was achieved. S_nce
the spoil grading was done with cra~,aler tractors, a fair l}'
rough boundary existed between the topsoil and the leveler
spoil. The approximate depth of surface and subsurface
topsoil that was applied was two feet, with topsoil in sc-ie
depressions on the area being deposited to a greater dept::,
The topsoil was stockpiled approximately 18 months prior to
reapplication.
The soil series covering this sire prior to mi^ing
has been identified as a 5uckley Silty Clay Loam. According
to the Soil Survey Interpretations obtained from the Soil
Conservation Service, this soil is unsuited for use as a
topsoil. Potential uses for reseeding are classi`_ied as
poor to very poor primarily due to the high clay content.
Soils with such high percentages of clays commonly have Zcw
permeability rates, high shrink-swell potentials and ren~er
seedlings vulnerable to mortality due to the frost-heavi^g
action of the soils.
Final leveling of the topsoil was done by a
motorgrader to achieve a uniform seedbed prior to reseeding.
3. Revegetation
Following the leveling of the topsoil, the area
was seeded with a mixture recommended by the Soil Conser:•-
ation Service. The mixture that was recommended to Enercy
Fuels was:
Seed Mixture
Species
...
