Box G
Steamboat Springs, CO 8dE77
Dear Au•, Crofts:
re:
Adequacy of Reclamation
The other two board members and I who made the inspection on Novemb_-
10th would like to formally report our o_oinion of your efforts. As
you remember, we looked at a plot in the Pit 3 transact and another
in the Fisli Creek transact. In general, we felt that both these sma_1
areas have been adenuately reclair_ed. We were pleased to note that
there is no significant soil erosion in either area. We were quite
surprised to find that there are virtually no noxious weeds in eithe_
field. Both of these areas are now capable of being used as produc-
tive pastureland. This is quite an accomplishment for strip mined
land in this county.
The seeding near Pit 3 is off to a very good start. I donut think
anybody could get any more growth in two years on a dryland grass
seeding in this county. If we have even average precipitation next
,year, that planting should really take off. The intermediate wheat-
grass looks like a particularly good plant for your purposes.
The 1974 planting near Fish Creek is, of course, a little farther
along. It is obviously well established since it appears to be pre-
venting erosion on n very steep slope. It is interesting to note
that the sagebrush is coming back on this-site. This tends to indicate
that one native species, at least, will probably reestablish itself
whether you want it or not.
It appears that your company is making a good start on reclaiming its
strip mined lands. Please keep up the good work.
Sincerely,,
IJJJ/ _
Glenn Werner, President
Board of Supervisors
/r, ~' ' '~ ~.7 '~
