Crane Director, Region V Office of Surface Mining Brooks Tower Building 1020 Fifteenth Street Denver, Colorado 80202 Dear Mr. Crane: . ,: :,. , , ~ / ;, This letter is try advise you of a major obstacle which has developed in mining the approved areas at the Orchard Valley Mine, and to regl~est authority to mine replacement areas so that we can continue to operate the mine beyone August 1st of this year. In June, 1980, we encountered a major fault with a 47 foot displacement in the right side of our North Main entries at crosscuts 36-37. We anticipate that the left side of the North Mains will encounter this same fault at crosscuts 39- 40. Your letter of September 14, 1979, granted us the right to mine Fifth, Sixth and Seventh East and to crosscut 48 in the Right tfains and to crosscut 38 in the Left Mains respec- tively (see Map 1). To enable us to mine an equivalent tonnage safely, we request that part of the tonnage approved for mining in Sixth East be placed on the left side of the Mains (see htap 1), so that we can take all nine main entries through the fault. An addi- tional five crosscuts, to crosscut 43, will allow us to pass through the fault in the left gains. The enclosed map shows the areas for which we would like au- thority, as well as the mining sequence. Please call me if you have any questions about this request. If this authority is granted, we will be able to mine coal until December 1, 1980 at our current rate of production.
