a, <br />Operating Hazards <br />Personal protective equipment is an essential requirement <br />for machinery operators and augering is no exception. <br />Noise <br />At no auger operation visited was hearing protection <br />worn by any of the operating personnel. Although no decibel record- <br />ings were taken by the survey teams, it seemed to all investigators <br />that maximum permissible decibels were exceeded by operation of <br />auger machines. <br />It is generally recognized that auger operators after <br />years of operation alongside a diesel have difficulty with the sense <br />of hearing. <br />78 <br />f. <br />Observation on scene was that conversation was next to <br />impossible due to noise levels, especially by the diesel exhaust. <br />
