`9 ,~C'
~~f '~
1^ }~ _. ~ ~....
~~ _.=
~: Out of this the Board had intended to recommend the payment of a, dividend,
but owing to the untbreak of the labour-strike, referred to in the nest paragraph, it
hae been deemed piudent to keep the cash resources of the Company' iu hand:
LABOUR-STRIKE.
As already announced in the Press, the Mill had to be shut down on the
7st September last ew-in~ to alabour-strike which commenced on that date, and
which continued without intermission to the 25th November, when, under militarj
protection, t~i~enty stamps were re-started. The trouble was caused by the demaud
of the Miners' Union for an eight-hour day for millmen, which the Telluride
tlfining Association, representing the mine-owners of the district, this Compau~
included, did not see their way to grant. It has always been the polio}- of the
Directors to cultivate the friendliest relations with their employees ; curl iu this
they have hitherto been successful, thanks to the tact and judgment displayed br
the General Manager Mr. HEP.lieN in dealing with the men. They viewred there
fore, with the deepest regret, the interruption of the mutual good-feeling which had
thus been established. ; but they felt that it was impossible to concede this demaud
consistently with their duty to the Shareholders and their loyalty to the other
members of the `l'elluride Mining Association. The Directors are glad to be
able to add that present indications point to a complete resumption of work at
an early date.
VISIT OF Messrs. R. T. BAYLISS and P. L. FOSTER TO THE MINES.
'1.'he reports received from Mr. HExsox as to the large tonnage oi' ore in
course of development in the Argentine Mine, pointed to the necessity of au
addition to the existing Mill in the near future ; and with a view to arriving at a
sound decision uu this; question, the Directors, through the kind offices ul `1'he
lixploration Co., obtained the consent of Mr. It. T. Bssnrss and Mr. P. L. l.''usrLu

+~w
tir
