During the month of January, 1896, a working shaft of ample proportions for deep mining was started,
and, at the time of your last annual meeting, it had reached a depth of 300 feet. During the year just
closed, it has been put down an additional 440 feet, and cross-cuts made to the vein, at the various levels,
besides a pumping station, which was cut at the sixth station. The following are the distances of the differ-
ent stations from the surface:
First station, 278 feet.
Second sta#ion, 350 feet.
Third station, 430 feet.
Fourth station, 500 feet. •
Fifth station, 582 feet.
Sixth station, 655 feet.
Seventh station, 725 feet.
This shaft is of three compartments, each 4 x 4~ feet in the clear, and is built in a very substantial
manner, being timbered with square sets of 10x10 timbers every five feet. It has been sunk in a solid
formation, away from the vein, thus avoiding any chance of a cave-in. As an extra precaution, Stull
plates, or cazriers, have been put in every fifty feet below the first `ation. It is estimated that the pres-
sent hoisting plant is sufficiently large to sink main shaft to a depth of from twelve to fifteen hundred feet.
