The applicant has applied for a conversion from a 110
to a 112 permit at this site. The current permitted acreage is 9.9 acres; the conversion
will include 240 acres. The actual mined areas will only be a portion of that total, and the
area will be mined in phases with no more than about 10 acres disturbed at any one time. The
site ie located in Lorimer County, about 3 miles east and 5.75 miles north of Livermore, CO,
at an approximate elevation of 6000 feet. Present during the inspection of the Bite were
Nathan Barton of Pete Lien & Sons, Inc., dba Colorado Lien Co., and Andy Moore and Allen
Sorenson of the Division.
We looked at the existing 110 quarry first. This quarry has been mining one body of gypsum
since 1977. There are two stockpiles present; one hoe finer material and the other hoe
larger, coarser material. Mr. Barton says that they will probably use these up by April.
There is still some gypsum to be mined in the original quarry. There are a couple of
highwalle present (approx. 15' to 20') around the area being actively mined. Some mined
areas of the 110 have been reclaimed with success (and released). The vegetation hoe done
very well considering the rocky nature of the surface. There ie one upper area to the north
where grading hoe been done, but there ie no vegetation yet.
Areas to be mined in the 112 conversion include other eroded east-west trending ridges where
the gypsum is found in beds up above the valley bottoms. There are a total of four areas,
including the present 110 site. Part of the proposed conversion ie to the south and
southwest of the ridge area currently being mined. The other two ridges are to the north.
They are very steep and rocky with minimal or no topsoil and not much vegetation. The
vegetation present includes some grasses, mountain mahogany, and rabbitbrueh. These ridges
will be lowered in elevation about 10 to 20 feet by the mining; consequently, the resulting
elopes will be less steep overall. The gypsum will be mined by drilling and blasting. A
portable crusher will be used on-site.
Mining will be done in phases with each of the ridge areas mined completely before mining on
another portion begins. Reclamation for a specific phase will begin while mining in that
area ie continuing. Mostly existing roads will be used, with some portions improved,
particularly at stream crossings. Valley areas between the ridges are overgrazed, generally
speaking, but they are not to be affected by mining.
I & E Contact~Addreae
NAME Mr. Nathan A.
