(Page 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID # M-1985-170
INSPECTION DATE 5/9/02
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS GRM
This inspection was conducted as part of the normal monitoring program of the Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology.
The BLM Burnt Shale Pit is a 110c sand and gravel pit located on Highway 139, approximately 21 miles north of Loma,
Colorado. Approximately 3.3 acres are permitted of which 2 are disturbed. The site is used by CDOT for materials in road
repair projects for the area. The weather was clear. Mr. Rex Goodrich from CDOT accompanied the inspector to the site.
The affected area boundary markers were not observed and must be installed per the requirements of Rule 3.1.12 (2) that
state; The boundaries of the affected area will be marked by monuments or other markers that are clearly visible and adequate
to delineate such boundaries. The tack of boundary markers is noted as a problem with the corrective action(s) and correction
date specified on the last page of this report. The inspector noted a grade stake marker in the northeast corner but nowhere
else. Steel t-posts, painted orange, may help prevent disturbance outside the permitted area and a violation.
No significant infestations of noxious or other problematic weeds were noted on site during this inspection. Several areas are
actually being reclaimed naturally along the northern edge of the permit. Rabbitbrush and sage are noted as the predominate
invading species.
All storm water appears to be contained on site. No erosional features were noted.
The Mining Plan calls for benching or terracing of the materials from the hill side. It appears that there are 2 minor benches
and materials are being moved to a grizzly /screen. No major issues are noted. The largest highwall appeared to be
approximately 25-30 feet in height.
Site disturbance and working are not conducive to any large scale reclamation until the site is mined out.
No other issues of concern were noted at this time.
Responses to this inspection report should be directed to Russ Means at the Division of Minerals and Geology, Grand Junction
Field Office, 101 South 3rd Street, Room 301, Grand Junction, Colorado 81501, phone no. 970-241-1117.
I & E Contact Address
NAME Rex Goodrich
OPERATOR CDOT
STREET Reoion 3. 222 S. 6"', Rm 317
CITY/STATE2IP Grand Junction.
