The
operator was contacted about the inspection and was present for it.
A permit ID sign was present at the entrance, and the perimeter of the permit was marked.
(Note: the north boundary line is not along the fenceline, but north of the fenceline. The
highwall on the north side of the pit is at the fenceline, but there is no danger of off site
impacts due to sloughing or by damage to the fence. The fence will be moved to facilitate
grading, all of which will be contained in the permit area.)
The 6/97 annual report states that crushing occured here in 1997, as well as pit slope
grading. These items were observed during the inspection. There are new 3:1 slopes on much
of the east and north slopes, The south slope, where the ramp into the pit is, has had a 3:1
slope established there for years. The west end of the pit is the active face, some of which
has been reduced to a stable gradient. The steep part of the highwall there will remain
until the gravel that is piled against it has been removed. A portion of the north slope,
as noted above, is still steep, and will be left as is until the fence can be relocated.
There was partial snow cover in the pit. Some of the areas of the floor not covered by snow
exhibited fairly good revegetation. These areas have not been topsoiled, but have been
allowed to revegetate naturally without repeated redisturbance. Areas of the newly graded
pit slopes had been seeded in 1997, but no vegetation was evident there. Very little topsoil
was noted on much of those slopes, which may contribute to poor revegetation success.
There is a small topsoil pile in the unmined portion of the west end. This, along with a
thicker native soil depth, may be spread onto a larger area during future reclamation,
especially on the slopes which may be more difficult to revegetate.
There was no equipment, structures, or debris at the site. It is a clean, well ordered
operation. The pile of waste asphalt material noted in the 1/97 inspection has been removed,
and that problem has been abated.
There were no problems observed during this inspection.
