The operation was running at the time of the inspection; trucks of shale were being
loaded at the main pit and dumped near the front gate. Dozers were idle at the time.
The operation consists of two pits that have apparently been abandoned, and two active pits.
One of tha active pits was recently opened, and the other lies near the south boundary of the
original permit area. After topsoil is stripped and stockpiled, the caprock sandstone ie
removed after blasting and the shale, a black clayetone, ie mined. Apparently, parts of the
clay are segregated from others ae there are various graded clay stockpiles on site. The
sandstone, which is moderately fractured, ranges up to about 40 ft thick along the highest
highwalls.
Crushing facilities appear to be inactivated. Above ground diesel storage and grease storage
areas near the main haul road west of the office are unbermed. The operation ie generally
tidy and free of unnecessary material.
Parts of the area have apparently been reclaimed to the point of topeoiling, and natural
vegetation consisting of various forbe, thistles and rabbit brush, though sparse, is taking
hold. The area is a pine/cedar/Gambles oak ecosystem developed over thin soils above the
sandstone. Natural soils are very thin above the sandstone and rocky in the streams.
Most of the topsoil stockpiles are covered with weeds rather than range grasses as required
of the permit.
Sediment control berme are constructed on the east end of the deposit, near the entrance
gate, and are holding sediment in check.
I & E Contact Address
cc:Jim Stevens, DMG
NAME Llovd Weir
OPERATOR General Refractories COIfIDdnV
STREET 721 West 3rd St
CITY/STATE/ZIP Pueblo.
