MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID #: M-1984-076
INSPECTION DATE: 3/23/2006
(Page 2)
OBSERVATIONS
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: CMR, HHP
This was a normal monitoring inspection of the DDD mine conducted by Chris Rowe and Harry
Posey of the Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology. Jason McGraw and Greg -were present
as the representatives of the Robinson Brick Company the operator of the mine. The DDD mine is
located along County Line Road In the Northwest corner of Elbert County.
The DDD is a clay mine consisting of two distinct active mine areas; the East Pit and the West pit.
The West pit is 60 acres in size with approximately 2.6 acres currently disturbed. There is an
excavated pit area of less then an acre in size, a working area or pad, a topsoil stockpile, and a clay
stockpile. The East pit is 41.4 acres, with approximately 12.4 acres disturbed. The site consists of a
couple of mine trenches, a pad, clay stockpiles, overburden piles, and topsoil stockpiles. The East
pit also has an ephemeral drainage that runs along the south and west side of the current affected
area. A berm has been constructed along this drainage to keep flows from entering the mine
trenches. Both pits are mined only occasionally when clay is stockpiled for the next year or more.
Both areas appeared to be well managed and were generally in good shape.
Specific observations of note include:
The excavated pit at the west pit area contains approximate 1 or 2 feet of water, and covers
approximately 0.15 acres. Water in the pit was also noted in the 1999 inspection report.
According to the Operator Representative this is stormwater runoff from winter snows, and the
pit dries up for much of the year. According to the Operation Plan this mine is not affected by
surface or ground water. If water is present on site the Operator needs to comply with C.R.S.
34-32.5-116, section 3.1.6 of Minerals Rules and Regulation, and possibly other regulations
concerning management of water on site. In order to address the issue of impoundment of
water the Operator may wish to pump the water out of the pit to determine if the pit recharges
from a ground water source (or use another method). If there is a groundwater source then
the Operator should contact the State Engineers Office. If the water is a surface source,
additional management activities for that water may be necessary. A Technical Revision to
the mine permit may also be needed to address water management issues.
There is currently a dispute with one of the 4 landowners about the lease that Robinson Brick
Company is working under. This dispute should not affect the mine permit at this point.
There were some weeds noted on the site, while it was difficult to determine the species, none
were thought to be on the State of Colorado A list of weeds. Continued weed management is
recommended.
Enforcement and Inspection Contact Address
NAME: Michael Leidich
OPERATOR: Robinson Brick Company
STREET: 1845 W.
