.,
Minesite Evaluation Report Narrative
Grand Mesa Coal Co.
Red Canyon Mine
Personnel:
Date:
Donna Griffin, OSM
June 15, 1984
This minesite is under temporary cessation since April 1984. (Blanks
left on Item 25) The gates were locked and no one was on site. After
the inspection I was approached by a neighbor who acts as watchman at
Red Canyon. He gave me the mine superintendent's name and home
number. Several attempts at contacting Larry Raske, Superintendent,
Friday night and Saturday morning were futile and thus minesite
records were not reviewed.
Drainage from the area was controlled by a large pond downslooe of all
disturbed areas, which was not discharging at the time. Drainage from
the refuse area had caused erosion on the outslope drains to the
pond. The refuse area, northern portion, had good vegetative cover.
The southern end was most recently active. The top bench has been
seeded and had light growth. In portions of this seeded area, coal
waste was evident on the surface. According to MLRD the seeding is
temporary erosion control and the area will be permanently reclaimed
after its useful life. Coal waste was end dumped on the lower bench
and not graded. Standing water in this area was field checked to
determine its acidity. The water was slightly alkaline. Topsoil
stockpile in the central portion of the too bench supported 20-30$
cover.
The shop and coal storage areas were maintained and drainage
controlled. The fan area at the top of the western ridge showed no
problems and the small topsoil stockpile from this area was
vegetated. No problems were noted at this minesite.
