C~

MINE SITE EVALUATION INSPECTION REPORT PAGE 7
Mt. Gunnison Mine
Roads had been surfaced with asphalt throughout the mine area. Coal was
loaded on conveyors in the mine and transported directly to the breaker
house and silos. Consequently, the roads are not subject to coal haul-
age and are classified as access roads. Light use roads overlap
adjacent U.S. Steel land and are used for access to upslope diversion
ditches. At least one light use road had been seeded and mulched;
others still in use were muddy due to recent snowfall and use.
A general slope failure occurred in the upper central part of the site.
Inclinometers have been installed throughout the slide area to monitor
ground movement. Those areas subjected to the failure were provided
with drains and regraded, hydroseeded, and mulched.
Hydroseeding and mulching operations were active during the inspection.
Pond embankments, road cut embankments, regraded areas and ditchlines
were all scheduled to be seeded and mulched.
A large topsoil stockpile was located immediately southwest of the
breaker house. The stockpile was satisfactorily marked and a ditch had
been constructed around its base. Some vegetative growth was evident on
the stockpile, and it had been recently seeded and mulched.
Surface drainage control measures were being implemented throughout the
site. Very heavy rock rip-rap was used in several areas to line large
diversions and discharge channels. Diversions 1, 2, and 4 have been
constructed upslope of the portal pad. Diversion 1 will function to
direct undisturbed drainage east and west of the mine area. Diversions
2 and 4 converge to a central culvert drain which directs drainage down-
hill to a sedimentation pond. The Latter two diversions were construct-
ed to accommodate drainage from a proposed refuse disposal site. All
three diversions were seeded and mulched. No pond discharges were
noted.
A coal stockpile was located at the breaker house. The stockpile did
not have an effective berm around it to prevent drainage from flowing
into an adjacent area being prepared for grading. The MLRD indicated
during a telephone conversion of 12/8/82 that a suitable berm had been
constructed around the stockpile as of the November 30 MLRD inspection.
No actual drainage problems had occurred.
No violations were noted at the time of the inspection.
