Garfield Energy Corp.
Revoked -DMG administered
Sunlight Mine
C-81-046
Partial special focus inspection
4/25/2000
Mitch Rollings, 370, OSM
David Berry, DMG
This was an inspection for the bond forfeiture off site impacts special focus topic. The
goal is to determine the extent of off site impacts associated with bond forfeiture mines.
The bond for this site was forfeited in 1987. Additional and final reclamation was
performed in the fall of 1999.
We were not sure if the disturbance in this area was pre- or post law. Slopes are about
1.5:1 and look like refuse material. Only the top of this area has been mulched.
The portals in the upper middle area have been closed. This and the chute area have all
been mulched. The slopes are about 1.5:1 and appear to consist of refuse and scoria.
The upper west area was a storage area and it has been topsoiled. It has fair vegetation.
All runoff from the upper areas go through a sedimentation pond located at the east end
below the pre-law dump. Given the nature of the steep and raw configuration of the
slopes, it's a good thing the pond was not reclaimed.
There is what appears to be an irrigation cana] at the bottom of the hill. There is a pipe
between the canal and the river that appears to have water high in iron discharging. We
cannot determine the source of the pipe, but Dave is fairly certain it doesn't originate
with the mining operation.
