American Shield Coal Co.
DMG administered
Fruita Mine #I and 2
C-015-81
Partial special focus inspection
4/26/2002
Mitch Rollings, 370, OSM
Dan Mathews, DMG
This was a partial inspection of a bond forfeiture site. The focus of the inspection was to
determine if any off site impacts exist. Off site impacts are those found from erosion,
sediment deposition, non-compliant water discharges, etc., which originate from the
mining operation.
In 1997, a 100 year precipitation event hit the Bookcliff range that resulted in a large
eroded channel down the face of the coal refuse pile. During the inspection, a contractor
to DMG was repairing the channel and lining it with riprap.
The disturbance form this mine continues to pass through a sedimentation pond with the
exception of one small area immediately adjacent to the pond. Vegetation on the site is
fair with the exception of the coal refuse pile where the aspect and dark soils hinder
growth.
We didn't find any off site impacts during this inspection.
