Pa e 2
MINE ID # OR INSPECTOR'S
PROSPECTING ID #: M-1997-007 INSPECTION DATE: 6/1912006 INITIALS: CMR
OBSERVATIONS
This inspection was conducted as part of the normal monitoring and enforcement inspection process that the
Division of Minerals and Geology (Division) carries out on atl permitted mines in Colorado at least once every
four years. Chris Rowe from the Division carried out the inspection; also present was Mr. Albert Templeton The
Denver Brick (Operator) representative. The mine is located 8 miles east of Kiowa, and just north of the
Dawson mine
This is a 30.06 acre mine site and is broken up into three phases, plus an access corridor. All three phases
have been mined or are being mined, with near 100% disturbance. The mining has stayed within the permitted
boundaries, but goes right up to the boundary around most of the mine. The phase one and two excavations
have both been filled in and some regrading has commenced. There are stockpiles and overburden piles
covering a portion of phase one and covering much of phase 2. Phase three is currently being mined, with the
excavation currently open. Along a portion of the northern boundary of phase 3 a highwall has been created
directly up to the permit boundary. The topsoil stockpile is located along the western boundary and is
vegetated and segregated from the stockpile and overburden piles. Along the eastern boundary overburden
has been backfilled into some dry swales. The slopes along the southern and eastern boundary are as steep
as 1:1. The mine plan calls for concurrent reclamation. And while the three phases were mine according to the
mine plan, the extent of reclamation is not as advanced as the mine plan suggests. Because there is some
level of concurrent reclamation, this will not be listed as a problem, however the $74,339 bond is insufficient to
carry out reclamation across the entire mine site in its current state of disturbance. The Division has
recalculated the reclamation warranty, the new required financial warranty for the Bijou mine is $126,837. The
Operator will be sent a letter informing them of the change and requesting the financial surety.
The weed problem that seen at the nearby Dawson mine, does not appear to be a problem at the Bijou mine,
probability because the entire site has been recently disturbed. The Operator should continue to check for the
presence of noxious weeds and begin control if establishment occurs.
The mine site was otherwise in good shape.
Enforcement and Inspection Contact Address
NAME: Albert Templeton
OPERATOR: The Denver Brick Company
STREET: 410 Prairie Hawk Dr.
CITY/STATE2IP: Castle Rock, CO 80104
cc.
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers CO Hazardous Materials and Waste Division
U.S. Bureau of Land Management CO State Engineers Office
U.S. Forest Service CO Water Quality Control Division
CO Department of Transportation X OTHER: State Land Board
