Dave Kidd requested permission to replace p
the specified underdrain material with a clean screened material processed from the 3/4-inch
minus select fill by screening out the 3/B-inch minus fraction. This results in a clean pea-
gravel-like product consisting of durable material varying from 3/8-inch to 3/4-inch in size. }
i concurred with Dave's opinion that the permeability of this processed material would exceed `y
that of the specified well-graded 12-inch minus underdrain material. Dave and John indicated
that the crusher would be in place to produce the specified materials by next Monday, and b
that they were only requesting permission to use this product in this one finger drain. I ~
indicated that it would be acceptable to proceed with this material and that they should`
provide the appropriate documentation as soon as possible for our approval.
Upon concluding my examination of the toe dam footprint, I next examined the finger drain
construction. The contractor had apparently initially placed the modified product in a
length of approximately 100 feet of the trapezoidal trench about 2/3's of the way up the
hill. When I examined that material it was obvious that it contained extensive fines and was
not as described. Dave Kidd informed the Ames foreman that the material in question would
need to be removed and replaced. According to the Ames foreman, his personnel noticed the
problem and suspended work on that segment earlier in the morning. They had then commenced
using clean material and had constructed approximately 200 feet of the trench finger drain
from the bottom progressing upslope. This material appeared clean on its surface. However,
as we were preparing to leave the site we examined the stockpile and observed the loader
placing a bucket load of material which appeared to be high in fines. I expressed my concern
and we returned to the crew to express our concern. At this time the field QA/QC
representative for Golder Associates arrived at the site and was informed of the situation.
I & E Contact Address
NAME John Hardaway
OPERATOR Crioole Creek 6 Victor Gold
STREET P.O.
