Hawk's Nest Mine
Forfeiture - DMG administered
Hawk's Nest Mine
C-81-016
Partial special focus inspection
4/25/2000
Mitch Rollings, 370, OSM
This is a reclaimed bond forfeiture site. The site was inspected as part of a special focus
review being conducted an all Colorado bond forfeiture sites to determine if any off site
impacts exist; be they bad water discharges, erosion which extends off site, sediment
deposition below the site, etc.
West End
This is where the loadout and silo existed. The pond next to the substation receives
drainage from all of the western end of the disturbed area. No off site impacts from this
section.
Middle section
There was a small crack at the top of the backfill above the west portal. It is backfilled
against a feature that was either a small bluff or small wall. There was little vehetation in
the area of the east portal. The area had also been reworked because of some sloughing
that had occurred.
There is a rock channel at the eastern end of the middle section. The inlet was open, but
the outlet was partially blocked. Runoff for this mid-section mostly crosses the road at
the rock channel or is held in the road ditch. The lower part is caught by the railroad
tracks. There is no obvious drainage channel through the tracks, so it may filter through
the ballast. One small drainage path is at the switch. The west half of this section drains
through a small CMP. There is a small amount of deposition, but very good natural
vegetation. There are no off site impacts from this section.
East section
The city is bringing soil and shrub and tree slash to the site. This will be separated,
chipped, and spread on the site. Disturbance above the road drains to a CMP in the
middle of the bottom section. The channel through the area is well grassed and has riprap
at the outlet. There is also a small berm and some old hay bales at the bottom end of this
section. There are three locations where runoff leaves the site; first spot is well vegetated
with no obvious deposition or erosion, the second spot is at the grass and rock channel
which looks good, and the last spot has a small head cut. There is a berm around the
bottom of this which has some small amounts of coal on the outside of it, but the coal
looks like it probably came from the berm itself. There are no off site impacts from this
section.
